David Hunt
David Hunt was born in 1942 and was educated at Liverpool College and Bristol University. Hunt trained as a solicitor before entering Parliament after winning in 1976 at a by-election for the constituency of Wirral, which changed to Wirral West in 1983 after some boundary changes. He worked as Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Nott at the Departments of Trade and then Defence, before then becoming a whip. During the Miner's Strike he was made the Minister for Coal before becoming Deputy Chief Whip after the 1987 General Election. He was the Minister for Local Government and Inner Cities from 1989 to 1990.
David Hunt entered the Cabinet following his promotion to Secretary of State for Wales in 1990 by Margaret Thatcher, staying in post until 1993 when he was moved to become the Secretary of State for Employment from 1993 to 1994 and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster until 1995. He also acted as Welsh Secretary during the 1995 leadership election when John Redwood stood down to enter the leadership contest against John Major.
After losing his seat in 1997 David Hunt was elevated to the Peerage as Baron Hunt of Wirral. He went back to work for Beachcroft Wansbroughs where he still works as a senior partner.
