Norman Lamont
Norman Lamont was born in 1942 in the Shetland Islands and was educated at Edinburgh and Cambridge University. After working at Rothschilds he became a Conservative MP in 1972 for the constituency of Kingston-upon-Thames, following his first attempt to win Hull East at the 1970 General Election when he was defeated by John Prescott.
Lamont was promoted to Financial Secretary to the Treasury in 1986 and then Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1989. Following John Major's elevation to Prime Minister, Lamont was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer in November 1990. John Major felt that numerous issues in his private life, together with the set-back of the Government's economic policy by being levered out of the Exchange Rate Mechanism, meant that Lamont would be better suited to another Cabinet role. Lamont refused the offer and resigned as Chancellor in May 1993.
Following Lamont's departure, he fiercely attacked the Prime Minister and took a more prominent position in the Euro-sceptic camp. Boundary changes in the early 1990s meant that Lamont's seat of Kingston was significantly altered, and he was selected as the Conservative Party candidate for the constituency of Harrogate. He was defeated there in the 1997 General Election, and in 1998 took a place in the House of Lords as Baron Lamont of Lerwick.
Norman Lamont's auto-biography was published in 1998 entitled "In Office".
