Ian Lang
Ian Lang was born in 1940 and was educated at Cambridge University. Whilst at Cambridge University he was a leading member of Cambridge Footlights and wrote for presenters such as David Frost. He wrote a script for the Footlights alongside John Cleese, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graham Chapman in 1961.
Ian Lang became the Conservative MP for Galloway in 1979, renamed to Galloway and Upper Nithsdale from 1983. Appointed a Government whip in 1981, Under-Secretary of State for Employment in 1986 and then he became Minister of State for Scotland in 1987.
Following John Major's victory in the 1990 Conservative leadership contest, Lang was promoted to Secretary of State for Scotland, a position he held until 1995 when he became the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. He lost his seat at the 1997 General Election. He was elevated to the Peerage in 1997 as Baron Lang of Monkton.
