John MacGregor

John MacGregor was born in 1937 and was educated at Merchiston School and St. Andrew's University. He was elected to the constituency of Norfolk South in February 1974, a constituency he was to hold until he stood down at the 2001 General Election. He became an Opposition whip in 1977 and then a Government whip from 1979 to 1981. He was then moved to become a junior Minister at the Department of Trade and Industry, and then in 1983 as a Minister at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

In 1985, MacGregor entered the Cabinet as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in 1987 he became a Minister attending Cabinet at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, with his role as Chief Secretary to the Treasury being taken by John Major. He was then promoted to Secretary of State for Education in Science in 1989, then in 1990 he became Leader of the House of Commons (and also Lord President of the Council). He maintained this job in John Major's administration, before becoming Secretary of State for Transport in 1992, which he held until his resignation in July 2004.

He did not contest his Parliamentary seat in 2001 and was elevated to the Peerage as Baron MacGregor of Pulham Market in July 2001.
