William Waldegrave

William Waldegrave was born in 1946 and was educated at Oxford University. He was elected for the constituency of Bristol West in 1979 and promoted to Ministerial rank at the Department of Education in 1981, moving to the Department of the Environment in 1983 and then the Foreign Office in 1988. Shortly before her departure Margaret Thatcher promoted Waldegrave to Secretary of State for Health in 1990, a position he held until the 1992 General Election.

In 1992 Waldegrave became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster at the Cabinet Office, then Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1994 and then Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1995. He lost his seat at the 1997 General Election and in 1999 was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Waldegrave of North Hill. He is married to Caroline Waldegrave who is a well known cookery writer and also runs Prue Leith's School of Food and Wine.
